| This is a large site with plenty to see. To
view some of the petroglyphs go to the
"Gold Butte Petroglyphs" section of our other web site and
scroll down to Whitney-Hartman 1 - 12. As you will see, this is a
great site, but it takes time. Just keep walking and looking, but
don't forget to mark where you parked on your GPS; it's easy to get
turned around at this site. The photo below is the turn off of New Gold Butte Road heading to Whitney-Hartman petroglyph site ( 36° 31.828' 114° 09.719' ). On the back side of the big red rock in front of you is a roasting pit. The arrow is pointing to the road you need to follow and the sign is a "limited use" area sign. |

Left Photo below: The arrow is pointing to one of the new parking areas ( 36° 30.706' 114° 11.122' ). The old parking area has been closed off and you now have to walk an extra .3 of a mile or so. Right Photo below: The Jeep is parked at one of the new parking areas ( 36° 30.706' 114° 11.122' ). This is where the old road has been closed, so you can park here and hike the old road (the arrow) to old parking area and original entrance to the site" ( 36° 30.581' 114° 11.182' ). If this is your first time to this site, I recommend that you park at this location and start your search for petroglyphs from the old parking area. There is another parking area a short distance down the road in the direction that the Jeep is pointing. That parking area will put you on the back side of the site. |

The photo below is the original parking area ( 36° 30.581' 114° 11.182' ) and the arrow points to the first rock art that you will probably encounter. There are petroglyphs all the way around this boulder. I highly recommend that you start here especially if it is your first visit. There are a lot of petroglyphs and some really beautiful panels at the Whitney-Hartman site, so to see this site properly bring a lunch, lots of water, and spend some time. There are a lot of boulders, nooks, and crannies to explore, so take your time and search everywhere and don't forget to mark your GPS where you parked; it is easy to get turned around at this site. |
