These are the three "Topographic" map software programs that I use. Each one has slightly different information and is used for different purposes. Many of my friends still use and will swear by hard copy topo maps purchased from the local map store. For the hardcore map person, that is cool, but for me I prefer having the entire state on my computer for approximately $100 per state. DeLorme is the exception and it is the entire US for about $100.
These programs are readily available on-line and at most sporting goods stores.

Mapping software for me is one of the most important pieces of my equipment. In conjunction with my GPS's provides much of the information that I need to get in and out the desert safely. The DeLorme PN20 and the Garmin 60CSx have the extra advantage of being able to have topo maps downloaded to a memory card in the GPS. This allows you to see a map of the terrain that you are hiking through. I find this an incredible advantage when taking a different route back to where I parked.
My personal preference is to have the DeLorme in my Jeep and the Garmin for on the trail.
